most important thing you can do is to begin praying and attending church together as
a couple, asking God to bless and help you as you prepare for marriage. There will be
several meetings with one of the priests of the parish and a program through the
Archdiocese of Hartford. Recently issued (within 6 months) sacramental certificates
need to be obtained from your parish of Baptism. If you are not a parishioner of St.
Mary Parish you need to obtain a letter of permission from your pastor to be married at

Who can attend Mass?
Anyone can attend Mass! Those who are not baptized in the Catholic Faith or are in Mortal sin may come forward in the communion line with their arms crossed over their chest, in order to receive a blessing from the priest, in lieu of Holy Communion.
Where and when can we get married?
St. Mary Parish has two churches:
Either can be booked for a wedding. Generally Saturday weddings at St. Mary’s start
either at 2:00pm or 4:30pm while at St. Joseph’s they can start anytime between

How do we reserve a date and time for our wedding?
Please call the parish office and ask to speak with the pastor. A $250 deposit is
required to reserve a date.
How do we arrange music for the wedding?
Dr. Muriel Maharidge is the music director at St. Mary Church. Mr. Jim DeLucia
is the music director at St. Joseph Church. You can arrange music with the director of
the church where your wedding will be held. The priest assisting you in your
preparation will give you the appropriate contact information. Payment is arranged
directly with the musician(s).
What kind of music can we have at the wedding?
Only sacred music is acceptable for Catholic weddings because the role of
music in the liturgy is to support the prayer of the community by lifting our minds and
hearts to God. Music of a secular nature and origin that is important to the couple
should be played at the reception or some other such opportunity. The music director
you work with will assist you in choosing appropriate music for the wedding.
Is parking available?
At St. Mary’s there is parking available on the street, including several spaces
directly in front of the church without meters. The Yale lot at the corner of Trumbull St.
and Hillhouse Ave. is also available after 6:00pm on weekdays and on weekends. There
is a very small lot behind the parish rectory on Temple St. that is not available for use
as it is reserved for the residents.
parking is also available on the street.
Does it cost anything to use the church for the wedding?
Catholics are always asked to contribute to the support of the Church and so we
do ask for a donation for the use of the church at weddings. Our two beautiful
churches take a lot to keep up! The donation is $600 for parishioners and $1200 for
non-parishioners. If there is financial hardship we are happy to adjust that expectation.
